The 2020 athletic season at Hutchinson Community College officially came to an end on Monday.
The National Junior College Athletic Association officially canceled the 2020 NJCAA Men's and Women's Division I and II national basketball tournaments as well as the entire spring championship season on Monday in response to the Coronavirus pandemic.
"In light of the progressive evolvement of the COVID-19 situation, the NJCAA has decided to end all competition for the remainder of the academic year," said NJCAA President Dr. Christopher Parker in a release on Monday. "As an association, the NJCAA exhausted all possible avenues to potentially postpone competition for both upcoming basketball championships and spring sport competition. We believe following the recommendations of the CDC is in the best interest of our member colleges and our student-athletes."
At HutchCC, this decision directly affects baseball, softball men's golf and men's and women's track teams. Their seasons end immediately. Also, the Blue Dragon women's basketball team will not compete at the national tournaments, which was to start Tuesday in Lubbock, Texas, and originally postponed until the week of April 20 before Monday's complete cancelation. Also, Blue Dragon football will not have its spring season.
On Sunday, Hutchinson Community College stopped face-to-face classes for this week ahead of next week's spring break. On-line classes are still ongoing this week for the college.
Regarding eligibility for spring sports, no spring sport student-athlete who was enrolled at an NJCAA member college in 2020 will be charged a year of participation.
Along with the cancellation of competition, all on and off-campus recruiting for all sports will be halted until April 15 with further evaluation to be assessed at that point in time.
The Hutchinson Community College Athletic Department continues to monitor the COVID-19 situation hourly.
