The Hutchinson Community College Football Team will take on the Eastern Arizona Gila Monsters in the 2017 Salt City Bowl.
Selections for all nine NJCAA bowls were announced on Tuesday. The 7-4 Blue Dragons will meet the 7-4 Gila Monsters at 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 2 at Hutchinson's Gowans Stadium.
The Blue Dragons will be making their 20th all-time bowl appearance and first since 2014. The Dragons are 11-6-2 all-time in bowl games, including 6-0 all-time in the Salt City Bowl. Hutchinson is riding a seven-game bowl winning streak dating back to the 2004 Heart of Texas Bowl – a 15-10 victory over No. 6 Tyler in Copperas Cove, Texas.
Eastern Arizona will play in its fifth all-time bowl. EAC will make its third Salt City Bowl appearance and second in a row. Last year, Eastern Arizona made a dramatic fourth-quarter comeback to defeat Butler 39-38 and improve its postseason record to 2-2.
Hutchinson and Eastern Arizona will meet for the second time in the Salt City Bowl. The Blue Dragons and Gila Monsters met in the second Salt City Bowl in 2010. Hutchinson defeated Eastern Arizona 42-21. Current Oakland Raider Cordarrelle Patterson was that game's offensive Most Valuable Player recording 165 all-purpose yards.
The 2017 Blue Dragons average 32.1 points and 319.4 yards per game this season offensively. Hutch is the No. 1 team in the Jayhawk Conference in rushing at 176.9 yards per game. The passing game produces 142.5 yards per game. Defensively, the Blue Dragons have been one of the better units in the Jayhawk allowing 21.0 points, 272.3 total yards, 89.9 rushing yards and 182.4 passing yards per game.
The Blue Dragons' rush defense will be put to the test against Eastern Arizona, the No. 2 rushing team in the NJCAA at 299.4 yards per game in 2017. The Gila Monsters average 34.1 points, 351.5 total yards and 52.1 passing yards per game on offense. EAC is allowing 19.2 points, 233.8 total yards, 124 rushing and 109 passing yards per game.
