A collective sigh of relief was let out on Monday as the Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team waited until the final bracket NJCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament bracket was released on Monday to see that the Blue Dragons were a part of the tournament field.

The Blue Dragons earned their 21st appearance in the NJCAA Tournament Monday as one of the eight at-large teams to be selected.

Earning the No. 11 overall seed, the 28-6 Blue Dragons will play Cape Fear at Noon on Tuesday, March 20 in an opening-round game. The Blue Dragons will be looking to defend their 2017 NJCAA National Championship.

Hutchinson makes its 21st appearance in the NJCAA Tournament, including its fourth-straight. The only other time the Blue Dragons went to three national tournaments in a row was in 1971, 1972 and 1973.

Hutch makes it to the national tournament for the fourth time in the past five years under head coach Steve Eck. The Blue Dragons punched their tickets in 2013 and 2015 as Region VI Tournament championships. The Dragons, in 2016 were a zone qualifier and in 2017, the Dragons were an at-large participant that went on to win the tournament.

The Blue Dragons are 48-24 all-time in NJCAA Tournament games. Hutch has advanced to the national semifinals 10 times and played in six championship games, winning in 1988, 1994 and 2017.

Cape Fear won the Region VI Tournament, defeating USC-Salkehatchie 76-65 in overtime in that regional.
