MONKEY ISLAND, Okla. – After his opening-round of 80 on Monday, Hutchinson Community College sophomore golfer was in tie for 63rd place at the Missouri Southern Fall Invitational at Shangri La Golf Club.
The Blue Dragon sophomore quickly turned things around and found his way back to the Top 10 to finish seventh in a competitive field with several of NCAA Division II and the NAIA's top golfers.
Gritton shot even-par 72 in the third and final round on Tuesday to finish in a tie for seventh place at 224. He climbed back within 10 strokes of individual champion Mason Banger of Harding University, who was 3-under after two rounds on Monday.
Gritton made the climb back to the Top 10 after firing a 72 in the afternoon round on Monday and matching that performance to close the tournament.
Gritton's effort also helped the Nos. 6/8 Blue Dragons make a big climb on the team leaderboard on Tuesday. Hutchinson climbed six spots to a tie for 10th place in the team standings with Southern Nazarene University at 930. The Blue Dragons shot 310 on Tuesday after Monday rounds of 312 and 308 on the windy par-72 Shangri La course.
Overall, it was a tough weekend for the Blue Dragons.
Individual golfer Max Smith was the second-highest Hutchinson placer in the individual standings, finishing in a 41st-place tie at 234 after finishing with an 82 on Tuesday. Smith was the only other Blue Dragon Golfer to reach even par, doing so in the second round on Monday.
Freshman Joseph O'Neill tied for 48th at 236. He finished with a 78 on Tuesday.
Sophomore Douglas Rios-Ceballos tied for 58th at 238 after an 80 on Tuesday.
Sophomore Andrew Rios-Ceballos tied for 64th place. He shot an 80 on Tuesday to close at 239.
Sophomore Matt Percy tied for 72nd with a 242, carding an 87 on Tuesday.
The Blue Dragons have one more fall tournament to play. That comes next Monday and Tuesday with the Dr. Pepper Classic in Waco, Texas.
