TOPEKA – The No. 6-ranked Hutchinson Community College men's golf team had quite a finish on Tuesday to close out the Washburn University Invitational.
The Blue Dragons shot a 293 in the final round Tuesday and jumped two spots in the team standings to finish as the team runner-up at the Topeka Country Club. The Blue Dragons were the only junior college team in the field of NCAA Division II programs.
Hutchinson finished with a 54-hole total of 898. The only team to shoot a better round on Tuesday was team champion Washburn. The Ichabods defeated the Blue Dragons by 20 strokes after a final round of 291 to close at 878.
The Blue Dragons had one of their most consistent rounds of the season on Tuesday. Sophomore Lake Leroux shot a 1-over 72 to record the low round for Hutchison. Freshman Charlie Herbert carded a 73, while Nathan McCulloch and Charlie Crockett both shot 74s.
Starting the final round in fourth place, the Blue Dragons jumped past Missouri Western (902) and Concordia-St. Paul (906) to move into second place at the end of the day.
Two Blue Dragons finished in the individual Top 10 at Washburn.
Herbert was sixth at 7-over 220. Right behind him was Leroux at 8-over 221.
Washburn's Blake Allen won the individual title at 213. He shot a 1-under 70 in the final round. Allen won by three strokes over teammate Jared burns (216).
McCulloch tied for 15th individually at 228. Peyton Austin closed with a 78 and finished tied for 23rd at 233. Crockett rebounded from back-to-back 80s on Monday with his 74. He finished tied for 28th with a 54-hole total of 234.
The Blue Dragons travel to Colbert Hills in Manhattan next Monday to open the Jayhawk Conference season with first of three conference-designated tournaments.
