WICHITA – Thanks to an eight-stroke improvement from the morning to afternoon round on Monday, the Hutchinson Community College men's golf team leads the Jayhawk Championship heading into Tuesday's final round.
Freshman Charlie Crockett shot a 1-under 70 in the afternoon round to lead the No. 9 Blue Dragons to an 11-stroke lead over Garden City after 36 holes at Crestview Country Club's South Course.
The final round of the Jayhawk Championship is Tuesday with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start at Crestview South. The Blue Dragons can clinch their first conference team title since 2016 with a first or second-place finish in the final league tournament of the season.
Hutchinson was tied with Garden City after the morning round at 304. Dodge City was just off the pace at 306.
With Crockett's 70 in the second round, the Blue Dragons also counted Peyton Austin's 74, Lake Leroux's 75 and Charlie Herbert's 76 to post an afternoon round of 296, the only sub-300 round posted on Monday by any team. Garden City shot 307 and Dodge City 310 in the second round
At 600 through 36 holes, the Blue Dragons lead Garden City by 11 strokes, Dodge City by 16 strokes and Hesston College by 23 strokes.
The Jayhawk Conference individual leader through two tournaments, Crockett is also the Jayhawk Championship individual leader through two rounds at 2-over 144. Crocket had rounds of 74 and 70 on Monday. He had a one-stroke lead over Dodge City's Anupan Wandee.
Crockett bids to become Hutchinson's first individual conference champion since 2013.
Austin is tied for third after two rounds at 8-over 150. Austin carded rounds of 76 and 74.
Leroux and Herbert are tied for 11th at 153. Leroux had rounds of 77 and 76, while Herbert posted scores of 77 and 76.
Nathan McCulloch, Hutch's fifth golfer for team scoring, is tied for 18th with teammate Max Ontjes, who is playing as an individual, at 157. McCulloch had rounds of 77 and 80, while Ontjes had rounds of 75 and 92.
Individual player Liam DeBattista had rounds of 80 and 82 and is 30th at 162.
