PARKVILLE, Mo. – The No. 4-ranked Hutchinson Community College men's golf team rallied from nine strokes down on Tuesday to win its second team championship of the 2019 fall season.
Despite elevated scores because of extremely tough scoring conditions at the Deuce at the National Golf Club of Kansas City, the Blue Dragons edged Morningside University for the Virginia McCoy Fall Classic team title by two strokes.
Sophomore Charlie Crockett had a rally of his own, coming back from four strokes down after one round to win the individual title by one stroke over Ave Maria's Jonah Manning. Crockett won his second title of the season and sixth of his Blue Dragon career.
The Blue Dragons shot a team score of 317 on Tuesday to finish the 36-hole tournament at 627. The Dragons shot 11 strokes better on Tuesday than Morningside, which shot 328 to finish at 629.
Hutchinson also won the KCK Fall Classic for its other team victory this season.
After shooting a 73 on Monday, Crockett fired an 80 on Tuesday to win individual honors with an 11-over 153. Morningside's Sam Storey was the first-round leader after a 69 on Monday. Storey ballooned to an 89 on Tuesday.
Crockett trailed Manning by one stroke after the opening round, but beat Manning by two strokes in the final round.
The Blue Dragons had three players finish in the Top 10 and four in the top 12.
Klopper's 76 was the low round by any player on Tuesday and was one of only three rounds under 80. Klopper's surge helped him climb 20 spots in the final standings to finish in a tie for fourth at 157.
McCulloch shot an 80 on Tuesday to finish at 157 and tie for sixth. Austin had an 81 on Tuesday and closed at 161, which tied him for 12th.
Trey Langdon carded an 83 in the final round and tied for 23rd at 165. Individual golfer Nolan Sughroue had an 87 on Tuesday and finished tied for 51st at 173.
Hutchinson's final fall tournament will be the NJCAA National Preview, October 31 through November 2 in Odessa, Texas.
