EL DORADO – Sophomore Michael Bryan posted the seventh-best hammer throw in Hutchinson Community College men's outdoor track and field history after a seventh-place finish on Thursday at the 2018 NJCAA Division I Track and Field Championships at BG Products Stadium.
Bryan and pole vaulter Myles Hansen were the only Blue Dragons to score in Day one of the championships.
Bryan was off the podium until his final throw of the finals when he unleashed a career-best throw of 170 feet to move into seventh place. Bryan's previous best throw was 168-11, which was set at the Region VI championships at Gowans Stadium two weeks ago. Bryan was ranked seventh in the nation entering the national championship.
Hansen placed sixth in the pole vault on Thursday. Hansen cleared 14 feet, 7 1/4 inches on Thursday. Hansen was ranked 12th in the NJCAA entering the championships.
Thursday was a bittersweet day for the Blue Dragons 4x100-meter relay team. The group of Denilson Whitmore, Richard Newman, Donovan Whitmore and Kadrin Williams broke the school record in the event, but placed ninth in Thursday's preliminary round to miss the finals by .04 seconds.
Already holding the 4x100 relay record set two weeks ago at the Region VI championships, the Blue Dragons improved that mark by .20 with a time of 40.38 seconds.
Results of other Blue Dragons on Thursday:
+ Jared Stark finished 22nd in the 10,000 meters in a time of 32 minutes, 57.56 seconds.
