PITTSBURG – A slow start on Friday gave way to a sizzling finish on Saturday for the Hutchinson Community College men's track and field at the NJCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Plaster Center.

The Blue Dragon men's 4x400-meter relay team broke the school record with a time of 3:14.07 to finish fifth on Saturday. The relay team of Denilson Whitmore, Donovan Whitmore, Brock Appiah and Elijah Smith earned All-America status with the performance.

The Blue Dragons broke the one-year-old record set on the same Plaster Center track of 3:16.94. The Whitmores and Smith were part of that record as well.

The Blue Dragons had one other competitor on the medals stand on Saturday.

Freshman Brett Hillabrand placed seventh in the men's mile run. His time of 4:19.44 was a PR and the fifth-fastest indoor time in Blue Dragon history.

Hutchinson competed in two other events on Saturday:

+ Garet Johnson placed 15th in the men's shot put with a best throw of 47 feet, 9 3/4 inches.

+ The 4x800 relay team of Hillabrand, Connor Kauffman, Tony Ibarra and Jason Luft placed 15th in a time of 7:59.62.

The Blue Dragon men finished 22nd with 11 points. Iowa Central captured the men's team championship and Barton was the national runner-up.

The Blue Dragons are scheduled to open the 2019 outdoor season on Thursday at the Southwestern Invitational in Winfield.
