HOBBS, NM – Freshman Silvetre Kibarar was the only point scorer for the Hutchinson Community College men's track and field team on Friday at the NJCAA Men's Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday.
Kibarar finished sixth overall in the 3,000-meter steeplechase final. He posted a time of 9:43.47. The Blue Dragons now have four team points. The Blue Dragon 4x800 relay placed eighth on Thursday.
The Blue Dragons will have several distance runners in Saturday's finals.
Three Blue Dragon athletes qualified for the 1,500-meter finals. Andrew Kibarar, who has the fastest 1,500-meter time in the nation this season, posted the second-fastest 1,500 qualifying time of Friday with a mark of 4:04.76. Freshman Brett Hillabrand was seventh in qualifying Friday with a time of 4l06.17. Sophomore Connor Kaufman was 10th in qualifying with a time of 4:09.63.
Freshman Elijah Fisher placed 10th in the long just with a best jump of 24 feet 1 1/2 inches.
Sprinter Brock Apppiah didn't qualify for the 100-meter finals. He ran a preliminary time of 10.62 seconds, which was the 23rd-best time in the preliminary round.
On Saturday, the Blue Dragons will compete in three events.
Anthony Gallardo will compete in the Javelin. In addition to their 1,500-meter finals, Kibet and Hillabrand and Kibarar will run in the 5,000-meter finals.
