Hutchinson Community College sophomore softball pitcher D.J. Cannon earned some preseason recognition by being named to the Fastpitch News' NJCAA Division II Preseason All-America team on Thursday.
Cannon, a sophomore left-handed pitcher from Fort Worth, Texas, was a first-team all-Jayhawk East and Region VI-District E pitcher as a freshman for the Blue Dragons. She was Hutch's No. 1 pitcher who helped the Dragons reach the Region VI Tournament final for the first time since 1987.
Cannon, who has already committed for next season to Missouri-Kansas City, went 18-9 last season with a 2.26 ERA. She had 20 complete games in 24 starts. She also had a save in making 31 overall appearances with six shutouts.
In 145 1-3 innings pitched last season, Cannon struck out 194 and walked just 73. Opponents hit .218 against the Blue Dragon left-hander. She allowed 117 hits and 63 total runs last season.
Cannon had a season-high 14 strikeouts against the Friends University JV on April 27. She had 10 or more strikeouts five times.
Cannon pitched a pair of one-hitters last season against Oklahoma Wesleyan JV on March 9 and against Labette in the opening game of the Region VI-District E Tournament on May 6 in Topeka.
Offensively, Cannon was Hutch's second-leading hitter with a .414 batting average. Cannon had 48 total hits with eight doubles, a triple and two home runs. Cannon had 22 RBIs and 22 runs scored. She had a season-high four hits against Kansas City on April 8.
Cannon and the Blue Dragons open the 2018 season at home against Pratt on Friday, February 9 in a doubleheader.
