A pair of 2018 Hutchinson Community College softball sophomores earned some postseason recognition by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association on Tuesday.
Pope and Bass were part of a 38-11 season for the No. 15-ranked Blue Dragons, who advanced to the Region VI Tournament championship game for the second-straight season.
Playing most of the season as Hutch's starting catcher, but finishing the season back at third base, Pope had some of the steadiest offensive seasons in program history.
Pope, a sophomore from Woodward, Oklahoma, finished with a team-high .421 batting average (67 for 159). The lowest her average dropped to in 2018 was .333. Her batting average stayed above .400 for the final 13 and 17 of the final 18 games of the season. Pope hit safely in 38 of 49 games this season with 24 multi-hit games.
Pope had 10 doubles, two triples and three home runs in her sophomore season. She drove in 37 runs and scored 36.
Her 67 total hits were 10th most in Blue Dragon single-season history
Defensively, Pope committed only four errors in 215 defensive chances.
Bass, a sophomore from Odessa, Missouri, tied the Blue Dragon single-season record for home runs with 15 this season.
Bass hit .381 (48 for 126) with 12 doubles, a triple a 15 homers. Her .849 slugging percentage was third in Blue Dragon single-season history. He 28 total extra-base hits tied for the sixth most in program history.
Bass tied a single-game record with three home runs against the Bethany College JV on April 24 at Fun Valley. She had three multi-homer games this season. Her 17 career homers were sixth most in team history.
Defensively, Bass had a .992 fielding percentage with two errors in 236 defensive chances this season.
