WICHITA – After a stunning run-rule loss in Game 1 Tuesday against the Friends University Junior Varsity, the Hutchinson Community College softball team was staring at a Game 2 deficit through two innings.
Helped by nine Falcon errors in the second game, the Blue Dragons rallied and earned a run-rule victory of their own in Game 2, a 13-6 victory over Friends in six innings to split a doubleheader at Two Rivers Youth Complex.
Blue Dragon pitching gave up four home runs as Friends rolled by Hutch 12-4 in five innings, suffering their first loss of the season.
The 3-1 Blue Dragons now travel to play five games on Friday and Saturday at the Cowtown Classic in Fort Worth, Texas.
GAME 2 RECAP
Held to four hits in the opening game, the Dragons were needing an offensive spark in Game 2.
Trailing 2-0 after one, the Dragons rallied to tie the game in the top of the second when Kylee Dunn scored on a passed ball and Bailey Pennycuff scored on a Taylor Ullery groundout. Trailing 3-2 after two, Dunn's RBI double started a five-run third inning and the Dragons grabbed the lead for good.
Maryssa Rollin led Hutchinson's eight-hit attack going 3 for 5 with her second home run of the season. She scored two runs and drove in two. Pennycuff was 2 for 4 with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs.
Rollin's home run came leading off the fourth inning. That made it 8-3 Pennycuff reached base three times with a pair of doubles and on an error.
Making her first career start in the circle, freshman Jessika Gomez allowed three runs, two were earned, but earned her first victory with four innings of work. Gomez got stronger as the game progressed. She worked a 1-2-3 third inning and she wiped out a leadoff single in the fourth by inducing an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play.
Gomez allowed five hits, struck out one and walked none. Sadie Loney worked the final two innings. She allowed four hits and two earned runs, but struck out three and walked nine.
Dunn and Caitlin Schumacher had doubles for the Dragons.
Friends out-hit Hutchinson 9-8.
GAME 1 RECAP
Coming off the high of Sunday's sweep of Allen at TRYC, Friends immediately jumped on the Blue Dragons with three runs in the first and six in the second.
Rollin was stung for the loss, going 1 1-3 innings in her first start of the season. She allowed seven hits and nine runs, including two home runs. Samarah Bailey threw 3 1-3 innings in her season debut, allowing five hits, three runs and two homers.
The Dragons had a season-low four hits. Rollin was 2 for3 with a run and RBI. Pennycuff and Taylor Ullery both had doubles in the game.
