After a tryout with the WNBA's Dallas Wings, former Hutchinson Community College women's basketball All-American Kalani Purcell will start her professional career in Australia.

A New Zealand native, Purcell has signed a professional contract with the Deakin Melbourne Boomers of the WNBL in Melbourne, Australia.

The Blue Dragons' career leader in six different categories, Purcell just completed her senior season at BYU. Purcell was the West Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Year and led the Cougars in rebounds, blocked shots and assists.

Purcell is the fourth member of her family to play basketball professionally, joining her sisters Natalie and Hailey – both who played at Hutchinson – and oldest sister Charmian. Kalani, Natalie and Charmian also have all played for the New Zealand women's national team, the Tall Ferns.

Kalani Purcell is one of four Blue Dragons currently playing professionally. Natalie Purcell continues to play as well as Christassia Walter and Chelsea Small.

While at Hutchinson, Purcell helped the Blue Dragons reach two NJCAA Tournament championship games.

Purcell owns Blue Dragon career records for points (1,176), total field goals (469), attempted field goals (855), rebounds (814), rebounding average (11.2), steals (259) and blocked shots (97).

Purcell also has single-season records of 684 points, 275 field goals and 443 rebounds. She has single-game records of 22 rebounds and six blocked shots.
