When pressed, the Hesston Larks didn't have any answers for the No. 13 Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team on Saturday night.
The Blue Dragons' final tune-up before the beginning of conference play became a 92-48 victory over the Larks at the Sports Arena. Hutchinson's first-half pressure caused 19 first-half turnovers – 10 by Dragon steals – as the Blue Dragons owned a 27-4 advantage in points off turnovers.
Hutchinson led 31-11 after the first quarter and 54-21 at halftime.
The Blue Dragons improve to 7-0 leading into Wednesday's Jayhawk Conference opener at Coffeyville. Hesston College falls to 1-8 as the Blue Dragons won their 22nd consecutive game against the Larks.
Hutchinson didn't shoot well from the perimeter hitting 34 of 80 shots (42.5 percent) overall. The Dragons had a season low two 3-pointers on 13 attempts. The Dragons were 8 of 11 from the free-throw line.
The Dragons hammered Hesston on the boards, outrebounding the Larks 56-29 with a season-high 28 offensive rebounds and a 32-4 advantage in second-chance points.
Three players scored in double figures for Hutchinson, led by sophomore Dejanae Roebuck who had 16 points and eight rebounds with two blocked shots. Makayla Vannett had 15 points and Keely Tini came off the bench to add 10 points and seven rebounds.
Hutchinson's defense held Hesston to 31.3 percent shooting and forced 27 total turnovers. The Larks were 15 of 48 shooting overall, going 4 of 10 from 3-point range and 14 of 23 from the free-throw line.
Denazia Jeffers and Essence Tolson had 12 points each to lead the Larks.
