The Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team opens a key three-game stretch of the season on Sunday on the road against the Colby Trojans.
The No. 10-ranked Blue Dragons (18-2, 10-1 Jayhawk West) and the much-improved Trojans (14-6, 5-6) tip off at 3 p.m. on Sunday at the Colby Community Building.
The game will be broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) and on sister stations KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5) beginning at 2:50 p.m. with Steve Carpenter (play-by-play) and Daren Dunn (analyst) calling the action. The Blue Dragon Sports Network will provide a videostream, also beginning at 2:50 p.m.
Playing one day later than normal because of Colby's annual mid-season high school tournament in the Community Building, the Blue Dragons know they face the potential of a two-game deficit in the Jayhawk West after Seward County already won its game on Saturday and remains unbeaten in the Jayhawk West at 12-0.
After Sunday, Hutchinson plays host to Barton on Wednesday and then travels to Seward County next Saturday.
Hutchinson faces a Colby team that went through the non-conference season unbeaten, but has gone 5-6 in conference play, including 3-4 against the Jayhawk East.
Sunday's game features the Nos. 1 and 3 scoring defenses in the Jayhawk Conference. Hutch is No. 1 in the KJCCC and No 4 in the NJCAA at 50.5 points per game. Colby is No. 3 in the league and No. 37 in the NJCAA at 58.3 points allowed.
The Blue Dragons won their fourth-straight game after Wednesday's 83-50 home victory over Dodge City. The Blue Dragons shot 50 percent or better for the fourth time this season (50.9 percent). Abby Ogle led a huge 31-15 third quarter to break the game open with 15 of her team-high 17 points in that third stanza. Brooklyn Betham returned to the starting lineup with a double-double, going for 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Colby was in a stretch of three wins over four games before Wednesday's 90-51 loss at Seward County. The Trojans trailed 22-6 after one quarter and never truly recovered, giving up 57 points in the second half.
Sunday's game will be the 64th matchup all time between Hutchinson and Colby in a series that began in the 1975 season. The teams have been conference foes in the 1995-96 season. Hutchinson owns a 49-14 all-time record over the Trojans.
The Blue Dragons are 20-7 in the Colby Community Building. Sunday's game is scheduled to be the last game for Hutch at the Community Building as Colby Community College is set to open a new home arena next season.
