Hutchinson CC Sports Information
The Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team goes after a share of the Jayhawk West lead on Saturday in a gym where very few visiting teams come out with victories.
The No. 8-ranked Blue Dragons (20-2, 12-1) travel meet No. 12 Seward County (18-3, 13-0) at 6 p.m. on Saturday at the Green House in Liberal. This will be only the second matchup against a nationally ranked opponent for the Blue Dragons this season.
The game will be broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) and on sister stations KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5) beginning at 5:50 p.m. with Steve Carpenter (play-by-play) and Daren Dunn (analyst) calling the action. The Blue Dragon Sports Network will provide a videostream, also beginning at 5:50 p.m.
After Seward County's 63-55 home win over Northwest Tech on Wednesday, the Saints moved to 13-0 in the Jayhawk West. The Blue Dragons rolled by Barton, 67-43, Wednesday to improve to 12-1 and remain one game behind the Saints.
Saturday's game is the first of two meetings between Hutchinson and Seward County. The rematch will be on February 22 at the Sports Arena.
The Blue Dragons will face a Saints team - the defending Jayhawk West Champion - riding a 61-game homecourt winning streak. Hutchinson has a history of snapping the Saints' homecourt streaks. Back in 2004, a 65-49 Hutchinson win snapped Seward's all-college record 135-game homecourt winning streak.
Saturday's game features the Jayhawk Conference's Nos. 1 and 2 offenses (Seward 77.6 points per game, Hutch 77.3 ppg) and the league's Nos. 1 and 3 scoring defenses (Hutch 49.5 ppg; Seward 59.2 ppg.). The Blue Dragons also rank No. 1 in the KJCCC in field-goal percentage (47.1), 3-point percentage (35.0), assists (18.9), blocked shots (4.7) and defensive field-goal percentage (29.6). Seward County ranks No. 1 in rebounding (48.5), offensive rebounding (16.1), defensive 3-point percentage (24.5) and 3-pointers allowed (5.0).
Saturday's meeting will be the 93rd between Hutchinson and Seward County. The Saints have won four games in a row and leads the all-time series 48-44. The Blue Dragons had won 10 in a row against the Saints, but has dropped 8 of the last 11 games played.
The Blue Dragons travel a lot in the next five days. After Saturday's trip to Liberal, the Blue Dragons will travel to Goodland to meet Northwest Tech on Wednesday.
Hutchinson and Seward County were both 2019 NJCAA National Tournament qualifiers as at-large selections. The Dragons advanced to the semifinals while Seward lost in the second round.
