The Hutchinson Community College women's soccer team's postseason run abruptly ended on Saturday as the Coffeyville Red Ravens upset the Blue Dragons 2-1 at the Salthawk Sports Complex in the opening round of the Region VI Tournament.
Coffeyville scored the first two goals of the match to put the Dragons down 2-0 with 30:13 remaining in regulation time. The Blue Dragons put on a late push as freshman Avery McCarter scored with 15:54 remaining in the game. The Ravens then had to survive a last-minute Blue Dragon corner and a subsequent shot.
The Blue Dragons complete their season 13-4-1. Coffeyville advances to the Region VI semifinals with a 13-5 record.
Coffeyville took a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute of the match when Gabriela Rodrigues finished a 2-on-1 and shot past Clara Burgmuller for the game's first goal.
The Ravens took a 2-0 lead in the second half. After a throw-in, Angelica Apoduca headed in a cross in the 70th minute.
After that, the Dragons pressed the ball and finally broke through against Coffeyville keeper Brylee Brasher. McCarter fired a nice pass from Miykayla Moresco past Brasher to cut the Blue Dragon deficit to 2-1 with 15:54 to go.
Coffeyville had most of the possession after that until the final minute. Sheena Nichol's corner kick was deflected and dribbled to the left of the goal. With time running out, Kaitlyn Sabala took a desperation bad-angle shot at the goal, but it went high as time ran out.
The Blue Dragons out-shot Coffeyville 20-14. The Dragons had four cornerkicks to Coffeyville's one.
Coffeyville's Brasher (13-4) made eight saves. Bergmuller (7-2) made two saves.
