The final game of the 2017 regular season is still smarting for veteran Hutchinson Community College head coach Sammy Lane.

One of the Blue Dragon women's soccer program's streaks he was so proud of was stunningly snapped and the 2017 season was instantly over.

Since the program's inception in 2005, Blue Dragon women's soccer had always qualified for the Region VI Tournament semifinals, a streak of 12-straight seasons. That ended last season after a 2-1 home loss to Coffeyville on October 28, 2017. The loss ended the season and sent the Dragons on a three-game losing streak, another dubious mark that hadn't happened since 2005.

Five players return from the 2017 team that went 13-4-1 and finished tied for second in the Jayhawk West.

Leading scorer Brailey Moeder (Hutchinson) returns after a season where she scored 18 goals and dished out 11 assists (47 points). Kaitlyn Sabala (Towanda, KS) had six goals and six assists. Megan Maslak (Deal, England) missed the final six games of the 2017 season, but had eight goals and four assists.

Defenders Hailey Burke (Topeka) and Yadira Delgado (Wichita) are back as well.

Lane, the only head coach in program history, is seven wins shy of 200 for his Blue Dragon career. Lane is 193-46-7.

Hutchinson will have scrimmages on August 8 and 11 and will open the 2018 regular season at the Salthawk Sports Complex against Northeast Nebraska in a 3 p.m. kickoff.
