BUHLER – Freshman Ashley Venegas posted a career-best seven points with a pair of goals and three assists to lead the Hutchinson Community College women's soccer team to an impressive 6-0 Jayhawk West victory over Hesston College on Wednesday at the Buhler High School Stadium.
The game was moved to Buhler when the playing surface at the Salthawk Sports Complex was unplayable from five-straight days of rain that produced more than 7 inches in the Hutchinson area. Playing on the turf at Buhler seemed to agree with the Blue Dragons.
Hutchinson won its 10th game of the season to improve to 10-2-1 overall and 8-2-1 in the Jayhawk West. That marks the 14th time in 14 seasons of Blue Dragon soccer to reach double figures in wins in a season. Hesston falls to 0-14 and 0-11.
The Blue Dragons out-shot Hesston 52-0, 22-0 in shots on goal. That was the 17 time in Blue Dragon history, the first since Garden City last season, that the Dragons reached 50-plus shots taken in a game.
The Dragons also held an opponent without a shot taken for the second-straight game. Hutchinson didn't allow a shot to Garden City on Friday. It was the 24th time in team history to not allow a shot on goal and the 39th time to not allow a shot altogether.
But it was the first time in team history to limit back-to-back opponents without a shot taken.
Venegas continued her hot streak with her fourth multi-goal game of the season and third in the last four games. Venegas scored a pair of goals and had a career-high three assists in her seven-point outing this season – the third of at least seven points by a Hutchinson player this season. Brailey Moeder has an eight- and seven-point game this season.
Moeder had a goal and an assist. Her three-point night moved her into 13th place on the career points list with 76. She is 11th on the career goals list with 27 and 11th on the career assist list with 22.
Taylor Camp moved to 9-2-1 overall with her seventh shutout of the season.
The game was a homecoming for White, who played her high school ball at Buhler. White is credited with the game-winning goal when she had the first tally of the game, blasting home a rebound from a Venegas shot off the post. Hutch led 1-0 with 31:21 to play in the first half.
Venegas scored her first goal of the night and team-high 12th of the season in the 30th minute from an Angela Rader feed for a 2-0 Dragon lead.
Five minutes, 44 seconds into the second half, Moeder took a nifty pass from Venegas and tucked a shot into the lower left corner from a tough angle to make it 3-0.
The Dragons then connected on a pair of corner kicks. Burke scored her second goal of the season – both on set pieces – when she headed in a Moeder corner kick for a 4-0 lead in the 56th minute. Smith headed in a Venegas corner in the 71st minute for a 5-0 lead.
Venegas closed the scoring in the 83rd minute from a Sydney Blackwell assist.
The score could have been much worse were it not for the efforts once again from Hesston goalkeeper Vivi Rodriguez, who made 16 saves on Wednesday. She has 33 saves in two games against Hutchinson this season.
The Blue Dragons are now 15-1 all-time vs. Hesston College with 11 wins by shutout.
The Blue Dragons notched all-time shutout 147 in program history.
Hutchinson travels to Dodge City to play the Conquistadors at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Dodge City.
