GREAT BEND – Freshman Samantha Vaughn had a goal and an assist and the Hutchinson Community College women's soccer team opened the Jayhawk West season with a key road victory at defending league champion Barton.

Hutchinson defeated Barton 2-0 on Saturday at the Cougar Soccer Complex. The Blue Dragons improve to 3-1 overall and are 1-0 in the Jayhawk West. Barton falls to 1-4 overall and 1-1 in league play. The Blue Dragons travel to Garden City on Wednesday.

Coming off a four-goal game eight days ago, Vaughn posted her second-straight multi-point game.

Vaughn scored the game's first goal in the 12th minute when she possessed a Barton turnover near midfield and sprinted on a breakway, beating Barton goalkeeper Itzel Diaz to her left for an unassisted goal and a 1-0 lead.

The Dragons took a 2-0 lead just five minutes into the second half. Naomi Waithira played a long ball to the corner that Vaughn chased down. Drawing two Barton defenders to her, Vaughn left a perfect cross for Esther Karhayu, who beat Diaz with a shot to the lower-left corner of the goal for a 2-0 lead.

Hutch out-shot Barton 5-3 going with a 15 mph wind in the first half. The Cougars owned 9-3 shot advantage going with the wind in the second half.
