ROSWELL, NM – Freshman Katelyn Elstun had a combined 24 kills in her collegiate debut, but the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team lost twice on Friday at the New Mexico Military Classic.
Friday was opening day for the Blue Dragons, who were swept by Pima College 27-25, 25-21, 25-23. Hutchinson then fell to No. 15 New Mexico Military 22-25, 25-21, 10-25, 14-25.
Hutchinson will play South Mountain at 11 a.m. and Odessa College at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
Elstun, a freshman outside hitter from Overland Park had 24 kills and hit .250 in both matches on Friday. She also had a good passing day with no errors in 26 attempts.
As a team, though, Hutchinson hit just .130 for the day.
The Blue Dragons could never quite get over the hump in any of the three sets against Pima.
The Dragons hit .361 in the first set, a minus-.033 in the second set and .310 in the final set. The Dragons hit .219 on 37 kills in the match.
Elstun hit .375 on 14 kills with two errors in 32 attacks to lead the Blue Dragons. Elstun also had a solo block.
Setter Laney Robertson had 15 assists and Eboni Sapien had 14.
Libero Alissa Bautista had a team-high nine digs. Espejo had six.
Freshman middle Jaydin Schake had six total digs (1 solo, 5 assist) to lead an eight team-block effort in the first match of the season.
The Blue Dragons captured their first set victory of the season, hitting .259 in a second-set 25-21 win over the No. 16 Broncos. The Dragons hit no better than .059 in the three sets they lost to NMMI.
The Dragons hit just .054 with 31 kills and 25 attack errors.
Elstun led the Blue Dragons with 10 kills on .125 hitting. Hiebert had nine kills on 30 swings, hitting .167.
Sapien led the Dragons with 14 assists and Robertson had 12 assists. Espejo had seven kills and Jenna Thorne had five kills on .556 hitting.
Bautista had 13 digs to lead the Hutch back row. Espejo had eight digs and Elstun had seven.
After splitting the first two sets with NMMI, the Broncos held Hutchinson to minus-.061 hitting in the final two sets. Hutch was limited to only 24 points in the final two sets.
