ROSWELL, NM – Freshman middle hitter Jenna Thorne hit .452 to lead the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team to its first victory of the 2019 season in a 3-1 victory over South Mountain in the NMMI Classic.

After getting swept on Friday, the Dragons defeated South Mountain 25-11, 17-25, 25-19, 25-17 for victory No. 1 of the tournament and the season. Odessa made it a 1-3 weekend for Hutchinson with an 18-25, 25-20, 16-25, 20-25 win over the Blue Dragons in the final match of the tournament.

The Blue Dragons will open at home at 6:30 p.m. on Friday when Dodge City comes to the Sports Arena for the Jayhawk West opener.

SOUTH MOUNTAIN RECAP
Thorne had a huge offensive match against South Mountain with 18 kills on 31 swings for a .452 attack percentage.

Thorne's performance helped the Blue Dragons hit .255 on 49 kills in the four-set victory. The Blue Dragons hit .346 or better in two of the four sets. The Dragons hit .067 in the second set, the only set dropped by HutchCC in the match.

Freshman Camila Espejo nearly had Hutchinson's first double-double of the season with 10 kills and nine digs. Espejo hit .278 on 18 total swings.

Sophomore Eden Hiebert and freshman Katelyn Elstun had six kills each, while freshmen Myracle Lettries and Jaydin Schake had four kills each.

The Blue Dragons racked up 11 service aces against South Mountain. Freshman setter Lainey Robertson had five aces, while Espejo and Eboni Sapien had two aces each.

Alissa Bautista had a tournament-high 18 digs in the four-set match.

Sapien totaled 20 assists and eight digs. Robertson had 17 assists.

Schake had four total blocks.

ODESSA RECAP
After splitting the first two sets against Odessa College, the Dragons faltered offensively in the final two sets to drop a 3-1 decision to the Wranglers.

Hutchinson hit .409 in a 25-20 second-set victory. Hutch hit a minus-.059 in the third set and .156 in the fourth set.

Elstun had 15 kills on .306 hitting to lead the Blue Dragons offensively for the third time in four matches. Elstun added seven digs, two blocks and two ace serves.

Espejo had 13 kills on .231 hitting. She posted the team's first double-double of the season with a tournament-high 14 digs. Lettries had five kills and Schake had four kills and five total blocks.

Sapien finished with 19 assists and six digs with an ace. Robertson had 14 assists and six digs.

Bautista finished with a team-high 16 digs to finish with 34 combined on Saturday.
