DODGE CITY – Freshman outside hitters Katelyn Elstun and Camila Espejo combined for 29 kills as the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team earned a Jayhawk West road sweep on Tuesday at Dodge City.
The Blue Dragons improved to 5-4 in Jayhawk West play with a 25-16, 25-19, 25-14 victory to complete the season series sweep of the Conquistadors. Hutchinson improves to 9-11 overall. The Blue Dragons have six days off before returning home for the first time since September 21 against Pratt.
Elstun led the Blue Dragons with 17 kills, hitting .344 on 32 attacks. Espejo hit .290 with 12 kills on 31 swings. Elstun and Espejo combined for 29 of Hutchinson's 35 kills in the match.
Sophomore Eden Hiebert had four total blocks. The Dragons out-blocked Dodge City 6-3.
Dodge City hit .000 for the match (22 kills, 22 attack errors).
Set 1: The Dragons scored the first five points of the match and led 6-1 on Elstun's fourth kill of the set. At 9-6, Hiebert had a kill and then Elstun delivered from the back row for a 13-8 lead. The Dragons took advantage of seven attack errors and four service errors to pull away. Elstun also had eight kills in the opening set. Her eighth kill gave Hutch a 23-14 lead. Espejo had a kill and then the Conquistadors were called for a double contact on set point. Hutch won 25-16.
Set 2: Espejo had a big second set with a team-high six kills in the set. She had two early kills for a 5-1 Hutch lead. Robertson had an ace to give Hutch a 9-4 lead. Another Espejo kill and a Dodge double contact had it 16-8 Dragons. Back-to-back Elstun kills gave Hutch a 20-10 lead. At 24-14 after Espejo's sixth kill of the set, Hutch saw Dodge City score five in a row before a Hiebert/Myracle Lettries double block closed out the set for a 25-19 victory and a 2-0 match lead.
Set 3: Dodge City got its first lead of the match in the third set. A 5-1 run gave the Conquistadors a 9-5 lead. An Espejo kill started an 8-0 scoring run for Hutchinson. A Hiebert/Lettries double block turned the set around and gave hutch a 13-9 lead. The Dragons closed out the set with a 20-5 run to turn around that early four-point deficit.
