Trailing Colby two sets to one on Wednesday, the Hutchinson Community College Volleyball team looked poised to pull off a huge comeback at the Sports Arena.
The Blue Dragons won the fourth set, but Colby scored 6 of the first 7 points of the fifth set and defeated Hutchinson 25-19, 14-25, 27-25, 23-25, 15-7 in a Jayhawk West match.
Hutchinson falls to 10-17 overall, including 6-6 in the Jayhawk West. The Dragons dropped their sixth-consecutive match. The Dragons are 3-3 in five-set matches in 2019. Colby improves to 21-4 and 12-1 in the Jayhawk West.
Sophomore Eden Hiebert pounded down a career-high 20 kills on .304 hitting to lead the Blue Dragons. She posted her first double-double of the season with 13 digs.
After the first set, the Blue Dragons switched to a 5-1 offensive formation. Sophomore setter Eboni Sapien posted career highs of 45 assists and 19 digs for her third double-double of the season.
Freshman Alissa Bautista reached the 30-dig plateau for the third time this season with 32 digs on Wednesday. Those 32 digs are the sixth most in single-match Blue Dragon history. Her career high is 33 digs.
The Blue Dragons had 54 total kills and hit .124 against Colby. Hutch had a narrow 8-7 block advantage and had eight service aces. Hutch had a 109-106 digs advantage as five difference Hutch players reached double figures in digs.
Freshman Katelyn Elstun totaled 15 kills on .078 hitting. She added 16 digs for her ninth double-double of the season. Freshman Jenna Thorne had 12 kills on .258 hitting and three total blocks. Sophomore Lauren Willson was the fifth player in double-figure digs with 12. Freshman Jaydin Schake had a team-high five total blocks.
Macarena Ruiz had 16 kills and Karleeann Ramos had 15 to lead Colby.
SET 1: Colby took an early 11-5 lead in the opening set and was not challenged. A Hiebert kill and Lainey Robertson ace pulled the Blue Dragon within 14-10, but Colby sided the Blue Dragons out on 10 of 14 opportunities in the first set. The Trojans hit .179 in the opening set, but held the Blue Dragons to .000 hitting.
SET 2: Three Elstun kills and a Hiebert service ace lifted the Blue Dragons to an early 6-1 lead in the second set. Colby pulled within 8-6, but the Dragons responded with a 6-0 run that had a Schake kills on a Colby overpass, an Elstun ace and back-to-back Hiebert kills for a 14-6 lead. Leading 17-13, a Thorne kill started a set-clinching 8-1 run. Sapien and Schake teamed up for a double block to make it 23-14. The Trojans then committed back-to-back attack errors to close the set. Thorne had five kills, while Elstun and Hiebert added four kills each. Hutch hit .250 in the second set to Colby's .029 attack percentage.
SET 3: The Dragons were out fast again in the third set with an 8-3 lead. Hiebert had kills for four-straight Hutch points, but the Trojans were able to stay close as Hutch led 12-10. Ruiz had four kills in what became a Colby 9-2 run to build a 19-14 lead. But the Blue Dragons refused to fold with an 8-1 run of their own. A Robertson ace gave the Dragons a 22-21 lead. Colby scored three straight to reach set point. The Blue Dragons fought off three set points, but a net violation on set point No. 4 gave Colby the third set 27-25.
SET 4: The Dragons had a tough start in the fourth set as Colby had leads of 6-1, 8-3, 10-5 and 16-9. Hiebert came up big for the Blue Dragons in the fourth-set comeback with six kills on .400 hitting and six digs. Her back-row kill started a 6-1 Hutch run that pulled the Dragons within 17-15 after an Elstun kill. Colby extended the lead to 21-17, but the Dragons scored five in a row with three kills from Hiebert and a Sapien ace to take a 22-21 lead. Hiebert had an ace for a 24-22 lead. Colby fought off one set point, but Myracle Lettries had a solo block to give Hutch a 25-23 win in the fourth set.
SET 5: Colby took immediate charge in building a 6-1 lead in the final set. Two Thorne kills and a Thorne/Schake double block pulled the Dragons within 6-4, but a Claire Chouloux kill started a three-point Trojan run for a 9-4 lead. Kills from Elstun and Hiebert pulled the Dragons with 10-8, but Colby scored 4 of the final 5 points of the match to close the Blue Dragons out.
Hutchinson travels to Garden City on Saturday for a 6 p.m. match before returning to the Sports Arena next Wednesday to meet the Butler Grizzlies in a key conference showdown at the Sports Arena.
