GREAT BEND – The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team rallied from a set down to force a fifth set on Monday night against Barton, but the Blue Dragons couldn't complete the comeback.
The Blue Dragons had a three-match winning streak snapped after a 25-19, 20-25, 21-21, 25-17, 13-15 loss to the Cougars at the Barton Gym.
With their postseason seeding already locked up, the Blue Dragons complete the regular season with a 13-18 overall record and a 9-7 mark in the Jayhawk West. Hutchinson will play host to an opening-round Region VI Tournament match on Tuesday, November 5 at the Sports Arena.
But Barton scored three early blocks to start the fifth set to take a 4-2 lead. Kills by Eden Hiebert and Thorne and a Thorne/Lettries combo block gave the Dragons a 7-6 lead. An Alissa Bautista service game Hutch a 10-9 lead, but Barton scored 5 of the next 6 points for a 14-11 lead.
Hutch had a chance to knot the score at 12, but a Barton over-set was hit long. The critical two-point swing have Barton a 13-11 lead.
A Katelyn Elstun kill and Barton double-contact violation erased two match points, but the Cougars finished off the Blue Dragons in a 15-13 fifth-set victory.
The Blue Dragons drop a second-straight five-set match to Barton this season and are now 3-4 in five-set matches this season.
Elstun led the Blue Dragons with 21 kills on .260 hitting. She posted her team-high ninth double-double of the season with 13 assists.
Thorne hit .478 with 13 kills on 23 swings. Camila Espejo had 12 kills on .250 hitting and a season-high three service aces. Hiebert finished with eight kills on .471 hitting.
