With the success of the inaugural Terry Masterson Twilight Classic, Hutchinson Community College head cross Country Coach Justin Riggs knew it was a no-brainer to do it again.
"We had a lot of good feedback from last year and so we are excited about hosting it again," said Riggs, who begins his third season as the Blue Dragon cross country coach. "We've made some improvements to the course that I think the teams will enjoy.
The Masterson Twilight Classic will once again be at Fun Valley on Friday with the women's race beginning at 9 p.m. and the men's race around 9:35 p.m.
In addition to the Blue Dragons, teams in the 2017 field will be Barton, Bethel College, Cloud County, Cowley College, Fort Hays State, Hesston College, Dodge City, Pratt, St. Gregory's (Okla.), Oklahoma Wesleyan University, Panhandle State University, Kansas Wesleyan University and McPherson College.
"Last year as we were setting up, we were wondering if the course will handle that many runners, but it did," Riggs said.
The two biggest changes to the course will be the running on the old running tracks where fences were brought in to make fastpitch softball field and there will be more portable lighting around the finish line.
Last year, Butler's men won the men's team title and Dodge City's women were the team champion. Hutchinson's men finished fifth and women were seventh in 2016.
According to Accuweather, the temperature at race time will be 73 degrees and dry.
