HCC WINS TEAM WORLD SERIES AWARD
Two members of the 2010 NJCAA World Series third-place Hutchinson Community College baseball team were named to the All-Tournament team and the Blue Dragons themselves earned a coveted team award after their stay in Grand Junction, Colo.
After Iowa Western defeated San Jacinto-North for the second time in two nights to claim the 2010 national championship, the Blue Dragons were awarded the Sportsmanship Award for the 2010 World Series.
Sophomore outfielder Jamell Cervantez and sophomore first baseman Shaun Hoover were named to the All-Tournament team.
Cervantez, a sophomore from Topeka, led the Blue Dragons in four World Series games with a .636 batting average (7 for 11) with a double, two home runs and a team-high-tying five RBIs. He also made several huge catches in centerfield, including a diving catch to save at least one run against Temple College in an elimination game victory.
Hoover, a sophomore from Omaha, Neb., hit .438 in the series (7 for 16) with three doubles, a home run and four RBIs. Hoover, who also was a vacuum defensively at first base, had the go-ahead hit with a double in the bottom of the eighth inning against Temple. Hoover also hit a home run San Jac’s Miguel Pena, who is projected to be a top-five-round draft pick in the 2011 Major League draft.
The Blue Dragons went 2-2 in the 2010 World Series to finish third, its highest national finish in HCC baseball history.
