The Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team hit 14 points and reached the century mark for the eighth time this season, but couldn't hold off No. 11 Coffeyville on Wednesday night at the Sports Arena.
The Red Ravens shot 63.2 percent from the field and that the final of 18 lead changes as the Blue Dragons fell 104-100.
The Blue Dragons dropped their fourth-straight game – the first four-game skid since 2011 – and fell to 8-5 overall and 2-5 in the Jayhawk Conference. The Dragons travel to No. 8 Dodge City at 3 p.m. on Saturday in Dodge City. Coffeyville is now 11-2 overall and 5-2 in the KJCCC.
The Blue Dragons led 51-47 at halftime and led 87-84 after an Aaron Franklin putback with 6:48 to play in the second half. The Dragons then went nearly 4 full minutes without a field goal as Coffeyville went on a 6-0 run to take the lead for good. The Dragons had just three field goals in the final 5 minutes as Coffeyville overtook the Dragons, outscoring Hutchinson 57-49 in the second half. Coffeyville shot 69 percent in the second half (20 of 29), while the Dragons were 14 of 39 with eight 3-pointers.
Franklin led the Dragons with his eighth game of 20 or more points, finishing with 24 points on 10 of 19 shooting. Franklin also had eight rebounds and four steals to pace the Dragons.
Steele Gaston-Chapman had a season-high with 14 points, going 7 of 8 from the free-throw line.
Kieran Carr also had season highs of 13 points on 2 of 5 3-point shooting. Antonio Green came off the bench to add 12 points and five rebounds. Kernan Bundy had 11 points with a pair of 3-pointers.
The Blue Dragons shot 37.0 percent for the game (30 of 81), hitting of 14 of 50 3-point attempts and 26 of 35 from the free-throw line. The Dragons were out-rebounded 44-38, but committed only eight turnovers to Coffeyville's 22. The Dragons also had 22 assists. Aaron Potter had a game- and career-high six assists.
Jordan Wildy had 25 points on 8 of 9 shooting with seven rebounds, four blocked shots and three assists to lead Coffeyville. Javarzia Belton had a double-double with 23 points and 13 rebounds. Belton was 9 of 9 shooting. Nathan Jackson also scored 20 points with two 3-pointers in the game.
The Red Ravens shot 36 of 57 from the field (63.2 percent), hitting 5 of 12 from distance and 27 of 37 from the free-throw line. Coffeyville outscored Hutchinson 52-30 in the paint.
There were 13 chances and 11 ties in the first half. The Dragons had a six-point lead at 18-12 with a Gaston-Chapman 3-pointer with 12:47 to play in the half. Green later gave the Dragons a seven-point cushion with a 3-pointer at the 1:57 mark for a 49-42 lead.
Coffeyville outscored Hutchinson 7-2 over the remainder of the game and pulled within 51-47 at halftime. The Ravens opened the second half on an 8-0 run over the first two minutes. Franklin buried a 3-pointer with 18:01 left to snap that Coffeyville run and the Dragons trailed 55-54.
The Ravens built a 73-67 lead with 11:31 to play, but a Potter 3-pointer started a 9-2 Dragon run. Franklin hit a 3-pointers and followed that with an inside hoop to take a 76-75 lead with 9:18 to go.
Franklin scored with 6:48 left to give the Dragons an 87-84 lead, but the Ravens answered with two Camien Shell free throws and a Johnson 3-point play for a 6-0 run and a 90-84 lead. The Dragons had numerous possessions to tie or take the game, but couldn't close the rally down the stretch.
GAME NOTES – The Dragons lead the all-time series with Coffeyville 31-25, including 11-7 in home games. … This was Hutchinson's eighth 100-point game, which ties for the fifth most in 100-point games in a season in team history. … This was Hutchinson's seventh game of 10 or more 3-pointers.
