DRAGONS SHOOT 285 TO TIE FOR 2ND AFTER DAY 1 AT NJCAA’S

NEWTON – The two new players added to the lineup for the NJCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship came up big on Day 1 for the No. 3-ranked Hutchinson Community College men's golf team.
Freshmen Corey Scullion and Tyler Walker both shot under par on Tuesday at Sand Creek Station and the Blue Dragons are just one stroke off the team lead after 18 holes.
The Blue Dragons had an opening-round 3-under 285 and trail Midland by one stroke. The Chapparals had a 284 on Tuesday. Hutchinson is tied with McLennan for second at 285. Indian Hills is fourth at 287 and Odessa is fifth with 288.

Round 2 is Wednesday at Sand Creek Station. The Blue Dragons tee off on Hole No. 1 from 12:40 to 1:20 p.m.
Scullion started his day with a double bogey on No. 10, but that was his only blemish in the opening round. Scullion got his round back to 2-over at the turn and then had birdies on Nos. 2, 4 and 5 to shoot 3-under over his final nine hole to shoot 2-under 70, which is in a five-way tie for sixth after 18 holes.
Walker set a strong pace for the Blue Dragons with three birdies in his first seven holes. Walker wound up with four birdies and three bogeys to shoot 1-under 71. Walker is in a seven-way tie for 11th.
Also in the Top 10 for the Blue Dragons is sophomore Charlie Box, who is tied for sixth after a 2-under 70. Box had a roller-coaster round on Tuesday. He got to 3-under with three birdies in his first seven holes. Box then went through a four-hole stretch with two bogeys and a double bogey to fall to 1-over. Then with birdies on Nos. 4, 6 and a closing birdie on No. 9 to finish with a 70.
The Blue Dragons also counted sophomore Louis Ross' 74 on Tuesday. Ross had two birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey. Ross is finished tied for 64th.
Freshman Jack Northgraves is tied for 64th on Tuesday after an opening-round 76. Northgraves had four birdies in his round, including consecutive birdies on Nos. 16, 17 and 18. He also had four bogeys and two double bogeys in his opening round.
North Idaho's Eli Mcnelly is the individual leader after 18 holes with a 6-under 66 on Tuesday. McLennan's Abe Bignell is second at 4-under 68.
