LIES TWIRLS 2-HIT SHUTOUT AS DRAGONS DOWN PARIS, WEATHERFORD

DENISON, Texas – The No. 17-ranked Hutchinson Community College softball rebounded from Friday's first loss of the season to earn a run-rule victory and a Korri Lies' two-hit shutout on the final day of the THF Winter Blast.
Alexis Mastin's two-run home run in the sixth inning finished off a 9-1 Blue Dragon victory over Paris Junior College on Saturday morning. Lies then twirled a two-hit shutout in her first career start in a 1-0 victory over Weatherford College to finish the Winter Blast 2-1.
The Blue Dragons are now 6-1 heading into a Friday matchup with Division II, No. 2 Murray State in Tishomingo, Oklahoma.
WEATHERFORD RECAP
Minus starting pitcher Emily Munson, who is injured, the Blue Dragoons sent Lies to the circle to start against Weatherford. She became the first Blue Dragon pitcher since Jordan Galliher to toss a complete-game shutout in her first career start in 2020.
The only hits allowed by Lies came in the second and sixth innings. The only other baserunner was a one-out walk in the third inning. No Weatherford baserunner advanced past second base. Lies retired 13 of the final 14 batters she faced.
The freshman pitcher from Cheney had four strikeouts and needed only 67 pitches to finish off the complete game.
The only Blue Dragon run came in the fifth inning came in the fifth inning. Ella Dougherty singled with one out and moved to second on an Olivia Sandoval groundout. Madison Grimes then singled through the left side of the infield to score Dougherty.
Dougherty went 3 for 3 to lead the Blue Dragons' nine-hit attack. Mastin had the only other extra-base hit, a fourth-inning double. The Dragons stranded six runners on base.
PARIS RECAP
The Blue Dragons had seven hits, but took advantage of five Paris errors and five more walks.
Aspen Goetz reached base in all four plate appearances, going 2 for 2 with two walks. Goetz scored two runs and had a double.
Sandoval, Grimes and Allie Stipsits all drove in runs, while Mastin's massive two-run home run – her second of the season – to center drove in two runs.
Hutchinson's first seven runs were unearned scoring two runs in each of the first two innings. The Dragons took a 7-1 lead after a three-run frame in the fourth inning.
Morgan Pennycuff (3-0) allowed a first-inning run and settled in after that. Pennycuff allowed four hits and just one earned run over 4 2-3 innings. She struck out six and walked four. Riley Wertz closed out the game with 1 1-3 innings of scoreless relief with three strikeouts.
