After a strong 4-0 week, the Hutchinson Community College softball team swept the Jayhawk Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week honors.
Sophomore Riley Wertz was named the KJCCC's Week 6 Player of the Week and sophomore Morgan Pennycuff was named the league's Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday.
One week ago, Wertz was named the league's Pitcher of the Week as well as NJCAA Pitcher of the Week.
Serving as the designated player for Saturday's Barton doubleheader, Wertz, a sophomore from Maize, went 6 for 8 (.750) with a double, home run and six RBIs.
She went 3 for 4 in each game, collecting a double, two runs scored and two RBIs in Game 1. She tied a career-high with four RBIs with a two-run homer in Game 2.
Also earning a save in Game 1, Wertz tied the Jayhawk Conference's career saves record with her 13th career save in two scoreless innings.
Pennycuff tossed back-to-back KJCCC complete-game victories for No. 18 ranked Hutchinson to improve her season's record to 7-1.
Pennycuff allowed just two earned runs and three hits in 12 innings in victories over Dodge City and Barton. Pennycuff allowed just one hit and one run with seven strikeouts in a five-inning run-rule win over Dodge City. She then tossed her first seven-inning complete game in a 7-1 Dragon win over Barton. She allowed just two hits and one earned run with six strikeouts.
This was the fourth and fifth league Player/Pitcher of the Week awards for the Blue Dragons.
