Hutchinson Community College women's soccer head coach Sammy Lane recently said how much pride he feels to see several of his former Blue Dragon players now in the soccer coaching ranks.
Lane will once again meet up with former player Ashley Burnett on Saturday when the Blue Dragons play host to the Pratt Beavers at 6 p.m. at the Salthawk Sports Complex.
This will be the fifth meeting between Lane and Burnett since she got the Pratt job before the 2017 season. Lane is 4-0 against his former player and is 12-0 all-time against the Beavers.
Burnett played on a pair of Jayhawk Conference and one Region VI championship teams in her two seasons with the Blue Dragons in 2010 and 2011. Burnett, who came to Hutchinson from Carnoustie, Scotland, had 16 goals and 11 assists for the Blue Dragons.
After Hutchinson, Burnett moved into Oklahoma Wesleyan where she earned all-conference and all-region honors. She then became an assistant at OWU for three seasons before taking over at Pratt.
Entering Saturday's game, the Blue Dragons are 6-1 overall and are in a three-way tie for first place in the Jayhawk West with 12 points. Cloud County and Barton also have 12 points. Hutchinson travels to Cloud County on Wednesday.
The Blue Dragons have reeled off five consecutive shutouts, the latest a 3-0 blanking of Dodge City on Wednesday in Dodge City.
Freshman Samantha Vaughn has 12 goals, which is fourth most in the KJCCC this season. Her 28 points also rank fourth.
Naomi Waithira's six assists are also fourth in the KJCCC. Now with 21 career assists, Waithira is tied with Madison Joyce and Johanna Adolfs for 12th place on the Blue Dragon career list.
Pratt enters play on Saturday with a 2-7 record. Since the Beavers defeated Garden City 2-1 on September 7, they have dropped three in a row to Cloud County, Oklahoma Wesleyan and Barton.
Isabella Battaglia, Britney Bayer, Madison Phillips and Kassandra Ramos all have two goals each to lead Pratt in scoring.
